Everything Collectors Need to Know Before Saturday's Live Event
Live signing: Jeff Garrett will join CoinHub on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern for his first formal live signing event for the newest 2027 Red Book. Watch on TikTok at @coinhub.
CoinHub is welcoming award-winning numismatic author and Red Book senior editor Jeff Garrett to our office for a special live signing. The event will stream through CoinHub on TikTok as part of our larger 24-hour live event.
Collectors will be able to bid on autographed copies of the newest 2027 Red Book, with each featured live auction starting at just $1. The opening bid is $1, but the audience sets the final price through bidding. CoinHub does not set a fixed sale price for these auction copies. Jeff will also sign a small number of the new MEGA RED X, 10th edition books.
According to CoinHub founder Blake Alma, this will be Jeff's first formal live signing event for the 2027 Red Book. Garrett is also a good friend of Blake's, which makes this more than a product launch for CoinHub. It is a chance to bring a respected numismatic author directly into the live community that CoinHub has built around collecting, education, and $1-start auctions.

What Is New in the 2027 Red Book?
The 2027 edition is the 80th edition of A Guide Book of United States Coins, the annual reference collectors simply call the Red Book. Whitman lists it as available beginning June 30, 2026, and announced nationwide shipping in early July.
This edition is not only a price refresh. The publisher says it contains more than 13,000 coins, tokens, medals, sets, and related collectibles, including more than 1,000 additions. Collectors will find more than 2,000 full-color images, current U.S. Mint information, updated research, and market values in as many as nine grades using Greysheet-based pricing and GSID catalog numbers.
Notable additions include roll values, Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgan dollars, and 2026 Semiquincentennial coinage. The 2027 Red Book also restores more in-series grading guidance and expands specialty coverage for patterns, varieties, and errors. Those changes make the book easier to use when a collector needs to identify a coin first and decide what to research next.
The standard edition is offered in paperback, hardcover, spiral-bound, large-print spiral, and ebook formats, with additional collector editions tied to the United States' 250th anniversary. The familiar spiral version remains especially practical at a desk because it stays open while a collector compares dates, mintmarks, grades, and mintages.
The Red Book should still be treated as a starting point rather than a guaranteed offer for a specific coin. Eye appeal, exact grade, certification, variety attribution, recent auction results, and current demand can all change what an individual piece brings. Its real strength is combining identification, history, mintage data, specifications, images, and price context in one approachable reference.
What Is MEGA RED X?
MEGA RED X is the much larger, deluxe companion to the regular Red Book. Whitman released the 10th edition on February 3, 2026. It is designed for collectors and dealers who want far more depth than an annual handbook can fit between its covers.
The publisher reports more than 18,000 listings, more than 100,000 values across as many as 13 collectible grades, over 1,100 auction records, thousands of color images, and more than 1,000 pages of research. The 10th edition adds an extensive study of $5 Half Eagle gold coins from 1795 through 1929, along with deeper coverage of patterns, errors, major varieties, modern issues, and established attribution systems.
Jeff Garrett contributes a 2026 market report, and the volume includes work from more than 90 numismatic experts. For a collector researching a difficult variety, comparing auction records, or building an advanced U.S. type or series collection, MEGA RED X is about as close to an all-in-one American coin desk reference as a single book can get.
2027 Red Book vs. MEGA RED X
| Feature | 2027 Red Book | MEGA RED X, 10th edition |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Everyday identification, mintages, history, and quick value context | Deeper research, advanced pricing, varieties, auction records, and specialty study |
| Size | Portable annual guide in several formats | Oversized deluxe reference with 1,000+ pages |
| Listings | 13,000+ | 18,000+ |
| Value coverage | Up to nine grades | 100,000+ values in up to 13 grades |
| Research depth | 2,000+ images plus updated essays and Mint data | Thousands of images, 1,100+ auction records, specialist essays, and attribution references |
| Special 2026 focus | Semiquincentennial coinage, rolls, and DMPL Morgan dollars | $5 Half Eagles from 1795-1929 and an expanded 2026 market report |
Most collectors will use the regular Red Book more often. MEGA RED becomes especially valuable when the question moves from "What coin is this?" to "Which variety is it, how does the market separate the grades, and where can I find deeper evidence?"
Who Is Jeff Garrett?
Jeff Garrett is president of Mid-American Rare Coin Galleries and serves as co-editor of the Red Book with John Feigenbaum. His numismatic career also includes service as president of both the American Numismatic Association and the Professional Numismatists Guild, along with a board role connected to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Collectors may also know his name from 100 Greatest United States Coins and the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933. His honors include the Professional Numismatists Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award and the Numismatic Literary Guild's Clemy Award.
Why Jeff Garrett's Character Matters to Me
I have been in the coin industry for quite a few years, but at 25 I am still one of its younger business owners. Numismatics is built on knowledge passed down over decades, and I respect that. At the same time, arriving with a different approach can be difficult. New ideas such as live streaming, social selling, and finding new ways to reach collectors do not always receive an immediate welcome. I understand why experience matters and why change can make people cautious, but that resistance can still hurt.
Jeff has never treated me that way. He respects the traditional side of the hobby, and he knows it at the highest level, but he is also willing to pursue new ways of doing things. He listens to new ideas. He asks questions. He is willing to try live streaming and meet collectors where they are. More importantly, he does not dismiss an idea because it comes from someone younger. Jeff understands that honoring numismatic tradition and bringing the hobby to the next generation are not opposing goals.
I have worked with Jeff for about two years, both personally and through his business, Mid-American Rare Coin Galleries. By my estimate, we have now done millions of dollars in sales together. That business relationship has been excellent, but it is not what I value most. Jeff is one of the kindest people I have met in this industry. He is generous with his time, loves a good conversation, and has taught me more than I could fit into one article.
I am grateful for his mentorship, but I am equally grateful for his friendship. Jeff is one of the most remarkable and impressive men I have met. The fact that he is willing to step into CoinHub's world, join a TikTok Live event, and help us make numismatics exciting for a new generation says a great deal about his character.
That combination of expertise and openness should make Saturday's format feel relaxed and accessible. Viewers can watch Jeff sign, hear the conversation in real time, and bid from home. For the CoinHub team, hosting a trusted friend who has helped shape some of the hobby's most widely used books is the part that makes the event especially exciting.
How the $1-Start Book Auctions Work
$1 is the opening bid, not a guaranteed purchase price. Viewers place bids during the live auction, and the highest valid bid determines the final sale price. Collectors set the price through bidding, not CoinHub.
This format keeps the event open to everyone. A new collector can join for the conversation, an experienced collector can pursue a MEGA RED copy, and every bidder can decide what an autographed book is worth to them.
CoinHub orders over $30 receive free shipping, and paid orders are shipped the next business day. Any platform-specific checkout instructions shown during the live event should be followed so combined purchases and shipping benefits are applied correctly.
The Signing Is Part of CoinHub's 24-Hour Stream
The Jeff Garrett signing is only one part of a much larger 24-hour CoinHub live stream. The signing occupies the 5:00-7:00 p.m. Eastern window on Saturday, but viewers can expect a full day of live collecting, auctions, and community conversation around it.
Follow CoinHub's live-streaming schedule and visit CoinHub on TikTok when the event begins. Collectors who are new to CoinHub can also review our TikTok deals and coupons and Where We Sell pages before the stream.
We hope to see you live on Saturday. Bring your Red Book questions, stay for the stories, and watch a small piece of numismatic publishing history happen from the CoinHub office.
