Beginner Coin Checklist

A first collection can start with ordinary change. No purchases or rare finds are needed.

• Choose a goal: one example of each denomination, five different dates, or a design that interests you.
• Use good light, a magnifier if available, and a soft surface. Handle a coin by its edges.
• Leave the surface as found. Do not polish or clean coins for this activity.
• Record the denomination and the exact date; write unreadable when a detail cannot be resolved.
• Look at both faces. Record a mint mark only when you can actually read it; absence is an observation too.
• Describe one feature of the design and one surface observation without guessing a grade or price.
• Keep a coin that fits your goal in an appropriate non-PVC holder. Keep its identifying notes together.
• Choose one question to research in an original source. A surprising appearance is a question, not authentication.
