Name what you see
Field, relief, legend and rim.
A useful description begins with location. The field is the open background; relief is design raised above it. Letters form an inscription, also called a legend. The rim borders a face, while the edge is the coin's side surface.
On the Morgan photograph, compare the open area before Liberty with her cheek. Neither label is a grade. Write an observation such as 'a line in the left field' before guessing at its cause.
- Identify obverse and reverse.
- Separate background from intended design.
- Request an edge photograph when the side matters.
