Melt, retail and proceeds are different questions
Melt is a metal calculation
Fine metal content times a reference price estimates the contained metal value. It is not a dealer offer and does not account for testing, refining, handling or a collector premium. A scarce date or exceptional specimen may trade differently from its metal content. Silver melt and gold melt remain separate calculations.
An asking price is not a completed transaction
A listing records what someone requests. A documented sale records a reported transaction at a particular time and under particular terms. A crossed-out asking price or an accepted offer with a hidden amount is not evidence of the final price. Returns, cancellations and duplicate appearances can further distort a sample.
Compare the specimen, then the price basis
Match date, mint, denomination, variety, grade, holder, designations and condition problems. Cleaning, damage, toning and eye appeal can make superficially similar coins poor comparisons. A details-grade example should not automatically inherit a problem-free price. PCGS discusses these auction-comparison limits.
Some sources report hammer alone; others include a buyer premium. PCGS defines its reported auction prices as final bid plus buyer premium, where applicable. That definition is a reading aid, not permission to copy its dataset. No auction records or photographs are imported here.
What the seller keeps
Seller proceeds start with the seller's actual gross credit, then subtract seller fees, postage, insurance and other seller costs. A buyer premium is not assumed to reach the seller. Unknown seller terms mean unknown proceeds, even when the buyer's total is known.
Small samples are still small samples
The median is the middle completed-sale amount in the selected group, averaging the middle pair for an even sample. The range is its observed minimum and maximum, not a valuation interval or a licensing workaround. Incomplete records are excluded from that measure. A handful of sales, older dates or repeated appearances cannot establish a reliable current market value.
