Classic U.S. Gold Coin Names: $1 to $20

Before 1933, regular U.S. gold coins used six face values. An eagle is a ten-dollar gold coin.

Gold Coin Names:

  • $1 — Gold dollar.
  • $2.50 — Quarter eagle.
  • $3 — Three-dollar gold piece.
  • $5 — Half eagle.
  • $10 — Eagle.
  • $20 — Double eagle.

A half eagle means five dollars, not half a dollar.

Patterns, commemoratives and modern bullion are separate from this list.

Face value is not today’s gold or collector price.
