Large Cent Types: Dates and Designs

U.S. large cents were made from 1793 through 1857. Check the design as well as the date.

Large Cent Types:

• 1793 — Chain (a chain on the back).
• 1793 — Wreath (a wreath on the back).
• 1793 — Liberty Cap, beaded border.
• 1794–1796 — Liberty Cap, toothed border.
• 1796–1807 — Draped Bust.
• 1808–1814 — Classic Head.
• 1816–1839 — Coronet Head, also called Matron Head.
• 1839–1857 — Braided Hair.

1793, 1796 and 1839 have more than one design. This list groups major types, not every small variety.

These are normal designs, not minting errors. A design name does not set a value. Date, condition and authenticity still matter.
